"In four years, a student graduates from The Ohio State University. In four years, 63,120 families hear the words 'your child has cancer.' "
When I first came to Ohio State, I attempted to be a part of many organizations, teams, and even a fraternity. Much to my dismay, none of my big OSU plans originally worked out for me. However, a few months into the school year, I decided to register for BuckeyeThon on a whim, and it is thanks to my last minute decision that my life has been forever changed.
BuckeyeThon is the largest student-run philantropy in the state of Ohio, raising money for the Hematology/Oncology/BMT unit at Nationwide Children's Hospital here in Columbus, Ohio. Nationwide Children's treats all patients - regardless of a family's ability to pay. Since it's creation in 2001, BuckeyeThon has raised over $8 million for the kids at NCH. Since joining the cause in 2016, I have personally raised over $4000 for this amazing movement and I am so thankful for every person who has so graciously supported me in my efforts!
My first year in BuckeyeThon I was a team member. My second year, I became a team captain for my residence hall and was lucky enough to be chosen to be one of 140 general body members of the organization. This upcoming year, I will be serving as the Membership Fundraising Coordinator within the Membership Development committee. My love and passion for this cause and BuckeyeThon as a whole is so prominent in my day-to-day life, and I truly believe joining BuckeyeThon has been one of the best things to happen to me in my college career.
Every member of the organization works their hardest to ensure that kids can be kids, without any strings attached. Wednesdays have quickly become my favorite day of the week because the energy in the room during our meetings is enough to make anyone's day turn around. I have never met a group of people who are more generous, kind-hearted, or passionate about a cause. These members have not only become my friends, but my family, and they continue to inspire me every day. I am so thankful to be an advocate alongside some of my closest friends in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Thank you for supporting me and allowing me to follow my passions. Your support means so much not only to myself, but the entire Ohio State community. Last year, we raised a record-setting $1,603,437.49 and I cannot wait to see how many miracles we will make this year. Together we can and will win this fight.
For The Kids! (with much love), Noel Rebecca
